If you’ve ever headed out for a stroll on Puerto Vallarta’s iconic Malecon, it goes without saying that you’ve had a chance to admire the astounding works of art found along the entire 1.6 km long scenic boardwalk route.
Here at Casa Tabachin in Puerto Vallarta, we have deep appreciation for the art scene in the city and think it is one of the most significant contributors that makes Puerto Vallarta such a special place. Every month, we’ll be highlighting a different artist responsible for one of the sculptures found on the boardwalk.
We’ll begin with none other than Sergio Bustamante.
If you’ve walked down the Malecon, we’re sure there is no way you missed “the ladder sculpture”. Actually named “Searching for the Reason” or En Busca de la Razón, the 60-foot high statue is hard to miss. Not only is the ladder hard to miss, but the surreal triangle-headed beings are enough to evoke emotion in just about anyone. What’s even better is that Bustamante designed the sculpture to be interacted with; you can actually climb up the ladder and get your photo up there with the Bustamante beings.
When asked what the sculpture symbolizes, Bustamante states that it was inspired by the writings of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Bertrand Arthur William Russell. Representative of philosophical dilemmas surrounding humanity, interpreting the world and our unwillingness to protect life on Earth, this statue is by far one of the most extraordinary of the Malecon collection.
Sergio Bustamante was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico before moving to Guadalajara at the age of 9. He attended the University of Guadalajara to study architecture and founded his art studio in Tlaquepaque in 1975. He has since opened art galleries in Tlaquepaque, Cabo San Lucas, and in Puerto Vallarta.
His work includes stunning gold and silver jewelry, furniture such as lamps and tables, and sculptures including fountains. You can check out more of his work on his website.
