Perhaps one of the most popular Puerto Vallarta hikes, this 60 – 75-minute moderate hike is an absolute must-do for those looking for a jungle beach adventure. The hike begins in Boca de Tomatlán, about a 30-minute drive south of Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town and winds along the beach and through the jungle. About half-way through the hike, you’ll come to Colomitos Beach, one of Mexico’s tiniest – but most beautiful – beaches. You’ll arrive at Las Animas after about an hour or so at a moderate pace, where you’ll have all kinds of restaurant options to enjoy deliciously fresh seafood and a cold beer.
Recommended: Sturdy walking shoes, insect repellant, water, sunscreen, a hat, and a bathing suit.
Along the highway about 15 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta you’ll find the Palo María bridge, just before arriving at Garza Blanca Resort. This hike follows the river up about 30 – 40 minutes until reaching a beautiful waterfall with a natural swimming pool. The hike does require that you cross over the river quite a few times, so coordination and a bit of balance are important for this trek. This hike is not recommended during the rainy season because the river can rise very quickly.
Recommended: Water shoes, insect repellant, water, a snack/lunch, sunscreen, a hat, and a bathing suit.
